The Concrete Outside Is a Different Job

The first thing worth knowing is that what goes down outside is not the same material as a garage floor concrete coating, even though both get called concrete coating. Indoors, in a closed room with a roof over it, epoxy does the work. Outside it is polyaspartic, which is the resin built to sit in the open. That one difference is why an exterior quote should never read like a garage quote, and it is worth asking which you are being given before anyone starts.

It is also why the finish outside has texture in it rather than being smooth. A polyaspartic floor coating outdoors is built up with flake or quartz through it, so the surface has a grain you can feel underfoot instead of a slick face. In a closed garage you can have a smooth floor because nothing ever lands on it. Outside, that texture is part of the job rather than a decision about style.

Doing the Whole Lot, Not One Slab

Almost everyone calls about one surface. It is usually the patio, sometimes the pool deck after a remodel. The reason we ask what else is out there is that the exterior concrete on most properties here runs as one continuous piece: the driveway meets the walkway, the walkway meets the entry steps, and the steps meet whatever is around the back. Coat one part of that and the rest looks worse by comparison, because the new surface is even and the bare concrete beside it is not. Done together it reads as one finished property rather than a patch.

The choice at that point is what it looks like, not what it is made of. A flake floor is built with colored vinyl flakes, so the color is broken up rather than solid, which suits an open lot where leaves and grit blow across it. A quartz floor uses graded quartz granules instead and comes out tighter and more even, which tends to be the pick for the areas people cross barefoot. Both go down over the same outdoor system, and both can run across every surface on the lot, so one color carries from the street to the back fence.

When It Is a Repair Job First

A coating protects concrete that is sound. It is not a way to make failing concrete sound again, and that line matters more outside than it does in a closed garage. If part of the surface has broken up or come apart, that is a repair conversation before it is a coating conversation. We would rather say so on the first visit than put a finish over it and have both of us looking at the same spot again next year.

Where it is not, concrete repair comes first and the coating follows once the surface will hold one.
