A Finish That Goes Over What Is Already There

Most work here is renovation rather than new build, and the existing floor is rarely the problem. The cost is in removing it. Microcement avoids that step: we prepare the surface, bond a base coat to it, build the finish up in two or three troweled layers, and seal it. Total added thickness is around two to three millimeters, so door swings, thresholds and cabinet toe kicks all stay where they are.

The substrate still has to earn it. A floor that moves, a tiled surface with hollow beds, or a slab with active cracking will telegraph through a thin finish, so we sound the floor and deal with what we find before anything decorative goes down. Where the movement is structural rather than cosmetic, we isolate it with reinforcing mesh in the base coats instead of hoping a topcoat will bridge it.

Floors, Stairs, Walls and Wet Rooms

The reason designers reach for microcement is that it does not stop at the floor. The same system runs up a stair riser, across a hearth, over a kitchen island and onto a bathroom wall, so a space reads as one material rather than four. There are no grout lines and no perimeter trim, which is most of the visual appeal and most of the reason it stays clean.

Wet rooms need the most care. Microcement is a finish and not a waterproofing layer, so the tanking goes underneath it, and the sealer decides how the surface handles standing water, soap and sunscreen. We specify a higher-build sealer in showers and around pool surrounds and give you the recharge interval up front, because a coastal bathroom is a harder job than a hallway.

Living With Microcement on the Coast

Newport Beach adds two things most interiors do not have to deal with: salt air and a great deal of direct light. Salt is hard on inexpensive sealers, and strong sun will shift the tone of a poorly chosen one within a few seasons, which shows most on the pale warm colors this finish is usually specified in. We use UV-stable sealers on anything that sees daylight and keep one product across adjoining areas so nothing ages at a different rate.

The honest limitation is that microcement is a finish, not a stone. It marks if something sharp is dragged across it, and the busiest routes develop a patina over years. Most owners like that and some do not, so we would rather say it before installation than have you find out afterward. We can show samples that have been walked on rather than only fresh ones.
