How a Slab Becomes a Polished Floor

The process runs through a sequence of diamond grits, each finer than the last. Early passes level the surface and expose as much aggregate as you want to see; later passes close the pores and bring up the sheen. Between them we apply a densifier that hardens the concrete chemically rather than sealing it.

How much stone shows is decided on the first pass and cannot be undone, so we agree it before starting. A cream finish keeps the surface nearly uniform; a salt-and-pepper exposure shows the fine aggregate; a full exposure reads almost like terrazzo.

What It Needs From the Existing Slab

Polishing rewards a sound slab and punishes a poor one. We check how level the concrete is, look for previous patches, and test the surface hardness before quoting, because a soft or heavily repaired slab will polish unevenly no matter how many passes it gets.

Encino's larger properties often have concrete poured across several decades, with additions meeting the original slab. Where color and hardness differ noticeably between pours, we say so up front and suggest a finish that works with the difference instead of one that highlights it.

Living With a Polished Floor

Maintenance is a dust mop and the occasional neutral cleaner. There is no recoat cycle, no peeling edge to chase and no downtime every few years. The sheen dulls slowly in heavy traffic lanes and comes back with a burnish rather than a reinstallation.

It suits open-plan interiors, kitchens, home galleries and garages where the owner wants a finished look rather than a utility floor. Radiant heat passes through it well. Where sound reflection matters, rugs and soft furnishings do the work a carpet would otherwise do.
